Ingredients

  • 4 small/medium apples Gala recommended; Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Granny Smith also work
  • 1.5 tsp cinnamon divided
  • 1 tbsp canola oil or vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter melted
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Mixing Bowl

Method

  1. Step 1: Prepare Apples: Core and slice apples into ½-inch thick pieces (peels can be left on). In a mixing bowl, toss apple pieces with canola oil, vanilla extract, and ½ teaspoon of the cinnamon, ensuring an even coating.
  2. Step 2: Air Fry: Preheat air fryer to 380°F (190°C). Arrange seasoned apple slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, cooking in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Air fry for about 10 minutes, or until soft and tender, shaking the basket halfway through (around the 5-minute mark) for even browning.
  3. Step 3: Finish and Serve: Transfer the perfectly tender apples to a clean bowl. Add the melted butter, the remaining 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and the granulated sugar. Gently toss until all the apples are glistening and evenly coated. Serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutions & Additions: Enhance the spice by adding a pinch of nutmeg, allspice, or ground cloves. Brown sugar is a great substitute for granulated sugar, or use maple syrup/honey (added at the end). For a dairy-free option, swap unsalted butter for a plant-based alternative or a bit more oil. Top with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts), caramel sauce, or granola. These apples also make a wonderful warm topping for oatmeal, yogurt, or pancakes.
Tips for Success: Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in batches for optimal caramelization. Shake the basket halfway through cooking for even results. Adjust cooking time as needed, looking for tender, not mushy apples. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture. If prepping ahead, slice apples and store in lightly salted water or water with lemon juice to prevent browning; drain and pat dry thoroughly before cooking.
Storage: Store cooled Air Fryer Apples in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat gently in the microwave for 30-60 seconds, or in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 2-3 minutes until warmed through.
