Ingredients

  • 1 Clear Jar or Cup e.g., Mason Jar, bigger and clearer is better for observing
  • 1 can Foaming Shaving Cream not gel; make sure it's the fluffy, foamy kind
  • Water simple tap water, to fill jar ¾ full
  • Blue Food Coloring a few drops for rain; can experiment with other colors
  • 1 Small Cup or Bowl for mixing 'rainwater' concoction
  • 1 Dropper, Straw, or Spoon your tool for making the rain fall; a dropper gives most control

Equipment

  • Clear Jar or Cup
  • Foaming Shaving Cream Can
  • Small Cup or Bowl
  • Dropper, Straw, or Spoon

Method

  1. Step 1: Fill 'Er Up! Grab your clear jar or cup and fill it about three-quarters full with water. This water represents the atmosphere beneath our cloud.
  2. Step 2: Create Your Cloud: Give that shaving cream can a good shake-shake-shake! Then, carefully spray a thick, fluffy layer over the water's surface. You want a nice, dense cloud sitting right on top. Don't be shy with it!
  3. Step 3: Mix Your Rain: In your separate small cup, add a few drops of blue food coloring. Then, add a small amount of water to it and give it a gentle stir. This creates our "rainwater" mixture. The darker the blue, the more dramatic your rain will be!
  4. Step 4: Make it Rain! Using your dropper, straw, or spoon, gently start dripping the blue mixture onto the shaving cream cloud. Watch what happens! As the "cloud" gets saturated with the colored water, it will eventually become too heavy, and the "rain" will start to fall through the shaving cream into the water below. It's truly mesmerizing to see!

Notes

Substitutions & Additions: Create rainbow rain by mixing different colored food coloring solutions. For extra sparkle, add a pinch of glitter to your colored water mixture. Experiment with different sized jars or clear vases. A small plastic syringe (without the needle) also works well for precise drops if you don't have a dropper.
Tips for Success: Use foaming shaving cream, not gel, as it won't create the fluffy cloud effect. Drip the colored water slowly and patiently to allow the 'cloud' to absorb it. Ensure your food coloring is fully mixed into the water. Gather all materials before starting for a smoother process.
Disposal: Once finished, simply pour the contents down the drain. The shaving cream and food coloring are generally safe for plumbing. Rinse the jar with warm, soapy water for your next adventure.
