Easy DIY Rain Cloud in a Jar Experiment for Kids

Ah, the joy of childhood! There's something so magical about watching a simple experiment unfold right before your eyes. Remember those days of wonder and discovery? Today, I'm excited to share a delightful and easy DIY project—an experiment that not only entertains but also educates your little ones about the water cycle. This Easy DIY Rain Cloud in a Jar Experiment is perfect for a rainy day and is sure to create lasting memories!
Course: Experiment

Ingredients

  • Clear jar or glass
  • Shaving cream (whipped)
  • Blue food coloring
  • Water

Equipment

  • Clear jar or glass
  • Dropper or spoon

Method

  1. Step 1: Start by filling your clear jar or glass about three-quarters full with water.
  2. Step 2: Carefully squirt a generous layer of shaving cream on top of the water. This fluffy layer will represent your cloud.
  3. Step 3: In a small bowl, mix a few drops of blue food coloring with a little water. This will create a vibrant rain solution.
  4. Step 4: Using a dropper or spoon, slowly add the blue water solution on top of the shaving cream. Watch in awe as the colored water begins to seep through the shaving cream layer.
  5. Step 5: As the colored water becomes too heavy for the shaving cream to hold, it will start to drizzle down into the water below, creating a beautiful rain effect.

Notes

This experiment is best enjoyed fresh, but if you want to preserve it for a bit, cover the jar with a lid or plastic wrap. Just keep in mind that the cloud effect may not last forever, so it's best to do this activity when you're ready for some fun!
