Ingredients

  • 1 loaf sourdough bread rustic, crusty loaf works best
  • 1 cup pizza sauce Your favorite brand will do!
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese grated or shredded; freshly grated is always a win if you have it
  • Pepperoni or your favorite pizza toppings Think beyond pepperoni – mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, cooked sausage, or even some leftover chicken work wonderfully.

Equipment

  • Baking Sheet
  • Oven
  • Sharp Knife

Method

  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). You want it nice and hot to ensure that crust gets perfectly crisp and the cheese melts quickly.
  2. Step 2: Slice your sourdough loaf in half lengthwise. Spread pizza sauce in an even, thin layer over the top of each bread half. Don't go too thick, or it might make the bread soggy.
  3. Step 3: Generously sprinkle your shredded mozzarella cheese and then the Parmesan cheese over the sauce. The more cheese, the merrier!
  4. Step 4: Add your pepperoni slices, or whatever delightful toppings you've chosen. Make sure to distribute them evenly so every bite is packed with flavor.
  5. Step 5: Carefully place your prepared sourdough halves on a baking sheet. Pop them into your preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the cheese is beautifully melted and bubbly.
  6. Step 6 (Optional): For that extra touch of golden perfection, switch your oven to broil for 2 minutes. Keep a very close eye on it, as cheese can go from perfect to burnt in a flash! You're just looking for a light golden brown.
  7. Step 7: Once out of the oven, let it cool for a few minutes. This allows the cheese to set and prevents you from burning your mouth. Then, grab a sharp knife and cut into individual slices. Serve immediately and enjoy your crispy, chewy, cheesy creation!

Notes

Customize your Sourdough Bread Pizza with various veggie toppings (sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, bell peppers, spinach, olives, zucchini), protein additions (cooked crumbled sausage, diced cooked chicken, crispy bacon, ham), or different cheeses (provolone, cheddar, feta, goat cheese). Experiment with a pesto base, white garlic sauce, or BBQ sauce. Fresh basil, oregano, or red pepper flakes can brighten flavors or add a kick.
For best results, avoid overloading toppings to prevent sogginess. Use day-old sourdough if possible, as it crisps up better. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Pre-cook any wet toppings (like mushrooms or onions) to remove excess moisture. This is a fantastic recipe to get kids involved in the kitchen!
Store cooled leftovers wrapped tightly in plastic wrap or foil, or in an airtight container, in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Reheat in a toaster oven or conventional oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-10 minutes, or use an air fryer, for best crispiness. Microwaving may soften the crust.
