Course: Beverage, Halloween Drink

Ingredients

For the Punch
  • 3 cups chilled apple cider
  • 2 cups chilled cranberry juice
  • 2 cups pomegranate soda or lemon-lime soda
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
For the Spooky Garnish
  • Black sugar for rimming
  • Gummy worms or spiders for garnish
  • Apple slices optional, for garnish

Equipment

  • Large Pitcher or Punch Bowl
  • Shallow Dish (for lime juice)
  • Shallow Plate or Bowl (for black sugar)

Method

  1. Step 1: In your largest pitcher or a festive punch bowl, combine the chilled apple cider, cranberry juice, pomegranate soda (or lemon-lime soda), and lime juice. Stir well to combine all the flavors.
  2. Step 2: To create the spooky rim, dip the rim of each glass into a shallow dish of lime juice. Immediately press the wet rim into a plate or shallow bowl of black sugar, turning to ensure it's fully coated.
  3. Step 3: Carefully pour the mixed punch into each of your prepared glasses, being careful not to disturb the black sugar rim.
  4. Step 4: Drape a gummy worm artfully over the rim of each glass, or let a gummy spider float eerily on top of the liquid for maximum spooky factor.
  5. Step 5: (Optional) Gently float one or two thin apple slices in each glass to enhance the "poison apple" theme.
  6. Step 6: Serve immediately while the punch is fizzy and the garnishes are at their peak creepiness. Enjoy!

Notes

Substitutions & Additions: Experiment with ginger ale, sparkling grape juice, or blood orange soda for different flavor profiles. For an adult version, add 1-1.5 oz of vodka, spiced rum, or apple-flavored whiskey per serving. Enhance garnishes with plastic spiders, gummy eyeballs, fresh cranberries (they look like floating blood drops!), or dry ice (use with extreme caution and read up on safety).
Tips for Success: Ensure all liquid ingredients are thoroughly chilled before mixing to keep your punch colder longer without dilution. If serving in a punch bowl, consider making a large ice block or ice ring. Don't rush the rimming process – use just enough lime juice to coat the rim without dripping. You can mix the apple cider, cranberry juice, and lime juice up to 24 hours ahead; add the soda and garnishes right before serving to maintain maximum fizz and freshness. Always taste and adjust sweetness before serving; add more lime juice if too sweet, or a splash of simple syrup if not sweet enough.
Storage: If you've only mixed the juices (apple cider, cranberry, lime), store this concentrate in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Add fresh soda when ready to serve. Once the soda is added, the punch is best within a few hours as carbonation dissipates. Leftovers with soda can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for about 24 hours but will be less fizzy. Always add garnishes just before serving, as they don't store well in the liquid.
