Ingredients

For the Sparkling Color Fireworks in a Jar
  • 0.75 cup water preferably warm, to help Alka-Seltzer dissolve faster
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • food coloring red, blue, yellow, green, purple; several drops added to oil without stirring
  • a pinch fine glitter silver, holographic, or iridescent; added to the oil mixture
  • 1 tablet Alka-Seltzer broken into small pieces for controlled fizzing

Equipment

  • Clear glass or plastic jar (12-16 oz)
  • Small bowl or cup
  • Spoon or dropper
  • Tray or towel

Method

  1. Step 1: Pour ¾ cup of warm water into a clear glass or plastic jar, leaving space for oil on top.
  2. Step 2: In a small bowl, add ½ cup of vegetable oil.
  3. Step 3: Add several drops of different food coloring into the oil without stirring to keep colors partially separate.
  4. Step 4: Sprinkle a small pinch of fine glitter into the oil mixture to add sparkle.
  5. Step 5: Slowly pour the colored oil mixture into the jar with water, pouring gently along the side to maintain separation.
  6. Step 6: Break the Alka-Seltzer tablet into small pieces.
  7. Step 7: Drop one piece of Alka-Seltzer tablet at a time into the jar and watch the fizzing bubbles carry colored oil droplets down like fireworks.
  8. Step 8: Continue adding small tablet pieces as the fizzing fades to prolong the sparkling effect.
  9. Step 9: Allow the liquid to settle between additions so the layers separate again for renewed effect.

Notes

Use warm water to speed up fizzing. Avoid stirring oil and food coloring to maintain color separation. Break tablets into small pieces for better control. Store jars sealed at room temperature; shake gently before use if colors settle. Shelf life is 1-2 weeks. Experiment with natural colorants or glow-in-the-dark paint for variations. Supervise children during use.
