Ingredients

  • 3 oz Grape Juice for the base, providing deep, spooky color and fruity sweetness
  • 2 oz Lemon-Lime Soda such as Sprite or 7-Up
  • 1 oz Simple Syrup can be bought or made at home with equal parts sugar and water
  • 1 oz Orange Juice
  • 0.5 oz Lime Juice freshly squeezed for best results
  • Black Sugar for rimming, found at specialty baking stores or online
  • Orange Slices for garnish
  • Red Grapes optional, for spooky eyeball effect
  • Ice for chilling

Equipment

  • Rocks Glass
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Jar with Tight-Fitting Lid (alternative to shaker)

Method

  1. Step 1: Grab a rocks glass. Run an orange slice along the rim to moisten, then gently dip and rotate the rim into black sugar until evenly coated. Set aside.
  2. Step 2: Fill your prepared glass generously with ice.
  3. Step 3: In a cocktail shaker (or a jar with a tight-fitting lid), fill with ice. Pour in the grape juice, orange juice, simple syrup, and fresh lime juice.
  4. Step 4: Secure the lid and shake until thoroughly chilled (the outside of the shaker will get frosty).
  5. Step 5: Strain the mixed liquid into your ice-filled, sugar-rimmed glass.
  6. Step 6: Gently top the mixture with lemon-lime soda.
  7. Step 7: Garnish your mocktail with a fresh orange slice. For an extra spooky touch, add a few red grapes.
  8. Step 8: Give it a gentle stir and serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutions & Additions: Try cranberry or dark cherry juice instead of grape. Use ginger ale or sparkling water with a splash of fruit syrup (like black cherry or raspberry) instead of lemon-lime soda. Replace simple syrup with a touch of maple syrup for a fall flavor, or a sugar-free syrup. For an adult version, add a shot of vodka or white rum. Spooky Garnishes: Think beyond grapes! Gummy worms hanging over the rim, plastic spiders clinging to the glass, or even a dry ice pellet (handle with care!) for a smoking cauldron effect can take your mocktail to the next level.
Tips for Success: For the best-tasting mocktail, make sure all your liquid ingredients are well-chilled before you start. Fresh lime juice makes a world of difference. You can rim your glasses with black sugar a few hours in advance. If serving a crowd, pre-mix the grape juice, orange juice, simple syrup, and lime juice in a pitcher; keep it in the fridge and add the lemon-lime soda and garnishes just before serving to maintain fizz. Adjust sweetness or tartness to your liking.
Storage: If you've made a batch ahead of time (minus the soda and ice), you can store the pre-mixed juice blend in an airtight container or pitcher in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Once the lemon-lime soda has been added, the mocktail is best enjoyed immediately to capture all that wonderful fizz and fresh flavor.
