Ingredients

  • 16 ounces orange juice freshly squeezed or favorite store-bought brand
  • 8 ounces tonic water
  • 2 ounces lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 2 ounces honey or maple syrup, simple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon black non-pareils crushed, for rim
  • 2 drops red food coloring optional
  • 5 drops yellow food coloring optional

Equipment

  • Medium Saucepan
  • Small Plastic Bag
  • Meat Tenderizer (or bottom of a heavy glass)
  • Small plate
  • Serving glasses
  • Shallow Dish (for water/lemon juice)

Method

  1. Step 1: Grab a medium saucepan. Combine orange juice, lemon juice, and honey in the saucepan. Stir gently to mix everything up.
  2. Step 2: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Once bubbling, reduce heat to a low simmer. Add optional red and yellow food coloring drops, stirring until desired ghostly glow is achieved. Let it simmer gently for just 2-3 minutes, then remove from heat and let it cool down slightly (you want it warm, not scalding hot).
  3. Step 3: While the juice mixture cools, prepare the glass rims. Take black non-pareils and place them in a small plastic bag. Smash the sprinkles using a meat tenderizer or the bottom of a heavy glass until crushed to a gritty texture.
  4. Step 4: Spread the crushed non-pareils evenly on a small plate. Lightly dip the rims of your serving glasses into a shallow dish of water or a little extra lemon juice. Immediately press the wet rims into the crushed non-pareils, twirling them to ensure a good coating. Set aside.
  5. Step 5: Once the juice mixture has cooled slightly, carefully pour about 4 ounces (about half a cup) of the flavored juice mixture into each prepared, rimmed glass.
  6. Step 6: Top each glass with an equal amount of tonic water. Serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutions & Additions: Swap tonic water for ginger ale for a sweeter fizz, or sparkling water/club soda for a less sweet option. Freeze orange juice, cranberry juice, or gummy worms into ice cubes. For an ultimate spooky effect, add a small piece of dry ice to a punch bowl (handle with gloves, never directly in glasses). Garnish with gummy worms, plastic spiders, or a slice of blood orange.
Tips for Success: Ensure all liquid ingredients are well-chilled. Simmer for just 2-3 minutes. Rim glasses gently. The orange juice, lemon juice, and honey mixture can be made a day or two in advance and stored in the fridge. Serve immediately after adding tonic water for maximum fizz.
Storage: Store any leftover juice mixture (without tonic water) in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Do not store the mocktail once tonic water has been added, as it will lose its fizz.
