Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 1 bottle clean water bottle or clear container preferably clear sports bottle or glass jar
  • 3/4 full vegetable, canola, or olive oil light-colored cooking oil to fill about three-quarters of the bottle
  • fill clean water slowly poured in to about 2 inches from the top
  • 4–5 drops food coloring choose your favorite colors or mix for effect
  • 1/2 tablet antacid tablet (like Alka-Seltzer) break tablet in half and drop one piece at a time

Equipment

  • Clean water bottle or clear container

Method

  1. Step 1: Prepare a clean, flat workspace and gather all materials. If children are involved, ensure adult supervision.
  2. Step 2: Fill the clean bottle about three-quarters full with your chosen oil.
  3. Step 3: Slowly add clean water until the bottle is about two inches from the top, creating two separate layers of oil and water.
  4. Step 4: Add 4 to 5 drops of food coloring to the bottle to add vibrant colors to your lava lamp.
  5. Step 5: Break an antacid tablet in half and drop one piece into the bottle. Watch bubbles rise and colorful blobs move, mimicking a real lava lamp.
  6. Step 6: When bubbling slows, add more antacid pieces to restart the bubbly action as desired.

Notes

Make sure bottles are clean and dry for best results. Avoid shaking the bottle to prevent mixing oil and water. You can store the lava lamp sealed at room temperature away from direct sunlight and reactivate the bubbles by adding fresh antacid pieces. Feel free to get creative with food coloring combinations or add small amounts of liquid soap for extra bubble effects.
